Job summary

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) seeks a Wastewater Surveillance Lab Specialist to perform advanced molecular testing in Wake County. You will conduct digital PCR, sequencing, and whole-genome sequencing to support surveillance and outbreak investigations.

The role includes validating new assays, preparing scientific docs, and delivering training to staff; it requires strong QA/QC focus and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in medical technology, microbiology, chemistry or related field.
• Three years of laboratory experience in a medical or public health setting.
• Ability to meet CLIA ’88 general supervisor requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform digital PCR, sequencing, and whole-genome sequencing for wastewater surveillance.
• Validate and verify new molecular assays and prepare technical documentation.
• Provide training to lab personnel on new molecular tests.
• Draft SOPs, validation reports, and related technical documents.
• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and monitor QA/QC procedures.
• Support public health emergencies with additional hours as needed.
