Job summary

The City of Wellington is looking for a trainee to learn the operation and maintenance of the City Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Wastewater Collection System, including lift stations.

Under supervision, you will perform inspections, collect samples, operate equipment, assist with preventive maintenance, and help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances in a municipal setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to obtain KS Class I Wastewater Operator Certification within 2 years.
  • Ability to obtain KS Commercial Driver’s License within 30 days.

Responsibilities

  • Check, monitor and lubricate equipment; perform maintenance at the WWTP.
  • Collect wastewater and sludge samples; perform standard tests and record results.
  • Operate plant including aeration and sludge handling decisions.
  • Load, transport, and land-apply sludge as required.
  • Inspect lift stations; perform preventive maintenance.
  • Operate trucks and maintenance equipment for the collection system.
  • Assist in constructing/repairing sewer lines and appurtenances.
  • Locate underground sewer lines for excavators.
  • Provide weekend/holiday standby as needed.
  • Assist with supply inventory, filing, and record-keeping.
  • Perform custodial and building maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Enforce compliance with laws and ordinances; follow policies.
  • Operate all job-related tools and equipment as required.
  • Protect confidential information in oral, written, or electronic form.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, this position is training for the responsibility of the operation and maintenance of the City Wastewater Treatment Plant and the City Wastewater Collection System, including the outlying lift stations.

Essential Functions

Include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

  1. 1. Checks, monitors and lubricates operating equipment and performs maintenance as required at the Wastewater Treatment Plant
  2. 2. Collects samples of wastewater and sludge and performs standard tests to evaluate the treatment process and maintains related records
  3. 3. Operates the Wastewater Plant including making decisions regarding aeration rates, sludge hauling and wasting rates
  4. 4. Loads and transports sludge to agricultural locations and then land-applies the sludge
  5. 5. Performs daily inspections and preventive equipment maintenance at the outlying lift stations
  6. 6. Operates trucks, rodding and water jetting machines and other transportation equipment in the maintenance of the City Wastewater Collection System
  7. 7. Assists in constructing and repairing sewer lines and appurtenances
  8. 8. Locates and marks underground sewer lines for other excavators
  9. 9. Provides stand-by on weekends and holidays
  10. 10. Assists with supply inventory, filing and record-keeping
  11. 11. Performs routine custodial and building maintenance tasks such as painting, scraping, washing, mowing grass, pulling weeds and shoveling snow
  12. 12. Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances
  13. 13. Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
  14. 14. Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  15. 15. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed
  16. 16. Protects and maintains any confidential information you have access to, whether oral, written, or electronic

Position Requirements:

Certifications / Licenses:

  1. 1. Ability to obtain a State of Kansas Class I Wastewater Operator Certification within two years of hire
  2. 2. Abiilty to obtain a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License within thirty days of hire

  1. 1. Ability to utilize power tools and equipment needed
  2. 2. Ability to recognize machinery malfunctions, assemble and install sewer lines and their appurtenances needed
  3. 3. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
