Job summary

The Buncombe County Solid Waste Department is seeking a Solid Waste Scale Operator to weigh trucks, collect tipping fees, and provide customer service at the landfill or transfer station. You will record data accurately and assist customers with fee information.

The role requires 40 hours per week with overtime and mandatory Saturdays. SWANA training is required within 12 months, and a valid NC driver's license is required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent; 1 year experience.
  • SWANA Operator training within first twelve months.
  • Valid State driver's license.
  • Knowledge of solid waste scale operations and data recording.
  • Understanding of waste disposal policies.
  • Basic clerical and bookkeeping knowledge.
  • Ability to read scales and record data.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports from records.
  • Ability to screen communications and route appropriately.

Responsibilities

  • Weigh trucks, read scales, record information, and direct traffic.
  • Screen waste for prohibited items.
  • Fill outweigh ticket and record data to the correct account.
  • Compute bills, issue receipts, and reconcile banking statements.
  • Collect tipping fees and make bank deposits.
  • Review records and reports for accuracy.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations using calculator/computer.
  • Provide patrons with information on dumping fees and locations.
  • Maintain scale house cleanliness and perform custodial duties.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
