Job summary

The City of Abilene is seeking Equipment Operator I/II to operate solid waste collection vehicles on assigned routes and perform basic maintenance. You will read maps, follow route sheets, and ensure safe, timely collection while adhering to safety procedures.

Operator I is entry-level; Operator II may supervise others and must complete Solid Waste Equipment Training. CDL is required for this role and related certifications may be needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• A valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
• Solid Waste Equipment Training is required for Operator II level.
• Experience: Operator I is entry-level; Operator II requires prior experience with solid waste equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles and related equipment.
• Read street maps and route sheets to locate destinations.
• Perform basic vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Dump collected materials at designated dump sites/landfills.
• Maintain vehicle records and complete required paperwork.
