Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Warehouse Worker at the PMC-Warrenton Family Store in Warrenton, VA. This full-time role involves operating a baler and forklift, loading and unloading donations, and preparing items for display while keeping the warehouse orderly and secure.

The position requires ability to lift heavy items (over 50 lbs.), working with donors, and assisting in drives and logistics. Prior warehouse experience and a valid driver’s license are preferred."

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Two years experience in sorting, receiving, storing, loading and unloading of materials in a warehouse or store setting; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

This position is responsible for:

Under the general supervision of the Thrift Store Manager, the Warehouse Worker operates a baler machine to secure, package and bind large volumes of clothing. Loads and unloads trucks performing lifting of heavy objects on a regular basis. Assists in maintaining the neatness and orderliness of the warehouse area. Receives, sorts, prices and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area. The Warehouse Worker will assist with loading, unloading, and sorting donations; moving donations and other materials into the warehouse; assist in the set-up, clean up and break down of the warehouse. He/she may also act in the capacity of a Truck Helper as needed. Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards. Receive, store, and distribute donations. Daily loading and unloading and placement of donated items into the warehouse. Ability to successfully interface with the public and Salvation Army donors in a variety of settings. Assist with can food drives, coat drives, toy drives and moving operations. Follow The Salvation Army policies and procedures at all times. Perform other tasks as assigned by management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Loads and fluffs clothes in the bailer machine to secure a solid bail of clothing with wire. Operates forklift to transport bail to storage truck. Unloads trucks of donated items being delivered to the warehouse.
  • Recycles cardboard boxes and cuts cardboard for use with the bailer machine. Stores shoes in storage areas. Monitors the warehouse entrances and dock area to deter theft.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures. Explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted. Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same. Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army. Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump. Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brack, etc. according to the category and condition.
  • Selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures; and tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull heavy (over 50lbs.) materials, supplies and equipment frequently. Heavy mobility duties are usually performed by combinations of standing, walking, climbing ladders or steps, bending, reaching or transporting merchandise on frequent change basis relieved by fewer periods of sitting or operating a vehicle.
Work is performed in a stockroom, warehouse or store environment where there are discomforts associated with changes in weather. There are occasional discomforts associated with noise, crowds, dust, lint, chemical odors and the like.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. AND
  • Two years experience in sorting, receiving, storing, loading and unloading of materials in a warehouse or store setting; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
