Job summary

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is seeking a Warehouse Shipping Associate to support our Indianapolis distribution center. You will load and unload shipments, pick orders, put away inventory, and ensure accurate, timely fulfillment for our network.

The role requires a High School Diploma, warehouse experience, ability to read and follow instructions, basic math skills, and PIT certification is preferred. This full‑time on‑site position offers growth opportunities in a safety‑driven, team‑oriented

Qualifications

  • Warehouse experience and familiarity with inventory and order fulfillment.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload shipments and operate pallet jack or forklift as needed.
  • Pick orders and fulfill from dry/wet areas with accuracy.
  • Put away finished inventory and execute smooth receiving.
  • Maintain clean workstation and follow safety guidelines.
  • Work flexible hours including weekends as required.

Hours: 6am-2:30pm Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose of Warehouse Shipping Associate

The Warehouse Associate will predominantly work wherever needed throughout the Distribution Center. Including tasks such as load and unload shipments, put away finished Production inventory, fulfill orders from dry warehouse area, execute smooth receipt when receiving product, inventory, replenish product in pick bins, and order fulfillment with accuracy in all activity. The Warehouse Associate will work with other staff members and customers to include Freezer needs, Cooler needs and Janitorial needs daily. All responsibilities and duties will further Gleaners’ mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of Warehouse Receiving Associate
  • The primary function is to pick orders using a riding pallet jack and a scan gun, loading outbound semis and box trucks, and using a forklift to bring product down in the racking for the next days orders.
  • Perform various warehouse functions including:
    • Replenishment, order-fulfillment (by both case and pallet quantities), prepare product for distribution (including wrapping pallets and labeling orders), and ship product to the endpoint destination.
    • Take direction as indicated by multiple sources: document, scanner or other instruction.
    • Keep your workstation clean.
    • Change tasks and assignments as the needs of our Distribution Center require.
  • Work safely and accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Operate PIT equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
    • All other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience of Warehouse Receiving Associate
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in customer service is desired
  • Knowledge and experience performing warehouse functions (safety procedures, product receipt, put-away, replenishment, inventory, order-fulfillment and shipment, etc.)
Other Relevant Skills and Abilities of the Warehouse Receiving Associate
  • Ability to read, write and to understand instructions.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff members, agencies, volunteers, and donors.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions, (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
  • Ability to count accurately and maintain accurate records.
  • Understands warehouse inventory.
  • Being able to identify good vs. bad produce.
  • Be accountable and meet deadlines on a consistent basis.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Powered Industrial Truck (PIT, pallet jack, forklift, etc.) certification and experience preferred (or ability to be certified).
  • Works well with others and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to discharge the Essential Functions of the position as set forth above.
Work Environment & Physical Demands of Warehouse Receiving Associate
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and/or move 50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000 lbs. of product using manual and/or electric pallet jack.
  • Ability to speak clearly.
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Warehouse/Distribution Environment.
  • This position is predominantly in the dry section of our warehouse with some activity in refrigerated and freezer environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Hot/Cold Environment and exposure to fumes/odors and dirt/dust.
  • Some exposure to outdoors (i.e. all-weather conditions) and the office.
  • Constant movement of vehicles and equipment; Machinery/equipment in use.
  • Requires movement of product in-and-out of trailers and straight trucks.
  • Flexible work schedule, including ability to work Saturday and evening hours as needed.
