Job summary

Span Alaska Transportation seeks a Warehouse Operations Supervisor (Night Shift) to lead freight handling with safety and accuracy. You will manage loading/unloading, coordinate trailer moves, and ensure on-time delivery while maintaining high customer service standards.

Ideal candidates bring forklift experience, strong communication, and a focus on safety. This role is night-shift, four nights per week, with responsibility for coaching staff and maintaining operational efficiency.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Promote a customer-first mindset by ensuring freight is handled accurately, efficiently, and with care to meet customer expectations.
  • Serve as a frontline representative of the company when interacting with customers, resolving issues professionally and proactively.
  • Ensure timely trailer unloading and freight availability to minimize customer delays.
  • Communicate freight status, exceptions, and service impacts clearly and promptly to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Respond courteously and efficiently to customer inquiries, issues, or special handling needs.
  • Coordinate and participate in stripping trailers by directing workflow and assisting the team as needed.
  • Load, unload, or coordinate others to load and unload trucks, vans, flatbeds, box trucks, and tractor-trailers.
  • Move freight throughout the yard and warehouse using forklifts or other material-handling equipment.
  • Lead, direct, and hold warehouse staff accountable for safety, productivity, service standards, and company policies.
  • Train, coach, and orient newly hired personnel with an emphasis on safety, accuracy, and customer service expectations.
  • Consistently follow and enforce all Safety, Fit for Duty, and DOT regulations.

About The Role

The Warehouse Operations Supervisor (Night Shift) plays a critical role in delivering a positive customer experience by ensuring freight is handled safely, accurately, and on time. This position coordinates and actively participates in the loading, unloading, staging, and movement of freight while serving as a key point of contact for internal teams and customers. The Supervisor leads warehouse operations with a strong focus on service excellence, safety, and operational efficiency. This position provides daily leadership, direction, and coordination to warehouse personnel. The Warehouse Operations Supervisor is responsible for setting service expectations, monitoring performance, coaching employees, and ensuring accountability. This is a night shift position, scheduled 4 nights per week from Sunday through Wednesday.

What you’ll do
Customer Experience & Service
  • Promote a customer-first mindset by ensuring freight is handled accurately, efficiently, and with care to meet customer expectations.
  • Serve as a frontline representative of the company when interacting with customers, resolving issues professionally and proactively.
  • Ensure timely trailer unloading and freight availability to minimize customer delays.
  • Communicate freight status, exceptions, and service impacts clearly and promptly to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Respond courteously and efficiently to customer inquiries, issues, or special handling needs.
Operational Leadership
  • Coordinate and participate in stripping trailers by directing workflow and assisting the team as needed.
  • Load, unload, or coordinate others to load and unload trucks, vans, flatbeds, box trucks, and tractor-trailers.
  • Move freight throughout the yard and warehouse using forklifts or other material-handling equipment.
  • Ensure freight is properly loaded, unloaded, palletized, labeled, and secured to maintain freight integrity.
  • Inspect freight for damage, shortages, or overages and accurately document and report discrepancies.
  • Lead, direct, and hold warehouse staff accountable for safety, productivity, service standards, and company policies.
  • Train, coach, and orient newly hired personnel with an emphasis on safety, accuracy, and customer service expectations.
Safety & Compliance
  • Consistently follow and enforce all Safety, Fit for Duty, and DOT regulations.
  • Model safe work behaviors and intervene immediately when unsafe conditions or practices are observed.
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Perform minor vehicle, equipment, and facility inspections to support safe and reliable operations.
  • Manage warehouse spills and clean-up promptly to maintain a safe and professional work environment.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with the supervisor on the opposite work shift to ensure continuity of service.
  • Fill in for the Warehouse Manager as needed, including:
    • Coordinating trailer deliveries from Port/Voyage Planning
    • Updating required computer systems accurately and on time
    • Completing delivery manifests and related documentation
    • Sending delivery alerts to other terminals
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support operational and customer service goals.

  • Strong communication skills are essential to this role. The Warehouse Operations Supervisor regularly interacts with employees, customers, vendors, contractors, and suppliers. Communication is primarily face-to-face and via radio or telephone and focuses on coordination, service updates, issue resolution, and operational needs. Professional, respectful, and customer-focused communication is expected at all times.

  • Ability to properly block and brace loads to protect freight.
  • Working knowledge of warehouse equipment operation, maintenance, and minor repair.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting and material-handling techniques.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
Certifications / Licenses
  • Forklift Certification required, or ability to obtain.
  • Hazardous Materials Certification required, or ability to obtain.
Extra credit if you have
  • One to two years of relevant warehouse or freight-handling experience preferred.
  • Medical card preferred.
Physical & Mental Requirements
  • Ability to push or pull heavy loads (up to 200 lbs.) using a pallet jack.
  • Ability to lift and carry up up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to operate warehouse equipment requiring bending, climbing, reaching, grasping, handling, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Strong body coordination, balance, and core strength.
  • Ability to remain focused and responsive in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.
Work Environment
  • Work is primarily performed in a warehouse setting and may include outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Exposure to exhaust fumes and moderate to high noise levels is typical.
