Job Description
The Instructional Designer works collaboratively with the Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning and the Director of Technology to develop, adapt, and maintain high-quality online courses across our K–12 program, Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC), and adult professional learning division, Northeast Online Teaching Institute (NEOTI).
This role turns course outlines, design blueprints, and Open Educational Resources (OER) into complete, student‑ready modules in Canvas while providing technical and design support for teachers who are modifying their courses. The ideal candidate pairs a practical understanding of K–12 child development with strong technical skills, using generative AI tools to draft practice items, build rubrics, design interactive widgets, and streamline development. In addition, this position manages daily operational workflows, course setups, and facilitator support within the NEOTI system.
Course Development and Standards Compliance
- Build VTVLC owned, student‑ready Canvas course modules directly from master course blueprints, design documents, and learning targets, synthesizing source materials to write clear, original instructional content.
- Partner with subject matter experts to help them design and build new courses or refresh existing pages, lessons, and assessments.
- Find, evaluate, adapt, and sequence Open Educational Resources (OER) to align with standards and course goals without relying on commercial textbooks.
- Build drop‑in study resources, self‑checks, discussion templates, and practice activities that teachers can easily insert into their courses.
- Apply an understanding of child and adolescent development to ensure reading levels, navigation, pacing, and cognitive load fit specific K–12 grade bands (elementary, middle, or high school).
- Build clean, consistent page layouts using established Canvas templates, responsive HTML/CSS adjustments, clear visual hierarchy, and integrated multimedia (including Canvas Studio and audio tools).
- Review master, vendor, and teacher‑created courses against ADA/WCAG accessibility standards, State Board‑approved standards, and VTVLC course quality norms.
Teacher Collaboration & Course Development Support
- Routinely review published courses for added materials to ensure alignment to VTVLC standards and expectations.
- Assist teachers with brainstorming, building, and embedding instructional resources, study aids, and interactive learning objects into their Canvas courses.
- Support teachers in applying organizational course templates, following Canvas norms, and resolving page layout or formatting bugs.
AI Integration & Interactive Learning
- Use generative AI platforms and prompt engineering to draft lesson content, write critical thinking questions, generate assessment rubrics, and produce student practice items.
- Prototype and build lightweight interactive widgets (such as flashcards, self‑assessments, and scenario checks) to enhance student engagement.
- Generate and integrate digital audio assets and video media into Canvas pages and modules.
- Embed approved third‑party edtech tools and interactive elements smoothly into course structures using Canvas Studio and LTI integrations.
NEOTI Operations & Professional Learning Administration
- Conduct systematic pre‑launch audits across active courses to identify and resolve broken links, missing media files, unformatted text, and tool setup issues.
- Create, configure, and maintain Canvas course shells and specific sections for adult professional learning courses, PLCs, mentor/mentee cohorts, cooperating teachers, and faculty spaces.
- Serve as the primary day‑to‑day point of contact for course facilitators, assisting with course copy/setup, roster questions, syllabus distribution, and basic technical troubleshooting.
- Execute routine maintenance checklists across the NEOTI catalog to keep course links, resources, descriptions, syllabi, and schedules current.
- Monitor participant registrations, track completion progress, generate course completion certificates, and handle routine inquiries from adult learners.
- Build and administer participant surveys (such as pre/post feedback for PLCs and summer workshops) to collect professional learning data.
- Coordinate with marketing and administrative staff to ensure course catalog listings, descriptions, and registration dates are accurate.
- Other duties as assigned.
This is a grant‑funded position.
