Job description

Scion Executive Search is partnering with an established and growing nonprofit healthcare organization in the Tampa Bay region to recruit its next Vice President of Philanthropy . This executive leadership opportunity will play a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s philanthropic strategy, strengthening fundraising efforts, developing a high-performing team, and guiding the launch of a newly established philanthropic foundation. The ideal candidate will bring a balance of strategic vision, hands‑on fundraising expertise, and relationship‑driven leadership to drive meaningful and measurable impact. This is a full‑time, onsite opportunity in the Tampa Bay region. Local candidates are preferred; however, highly qualified candidates seeking relocation are encouraged to apply.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Our client provides mission‑driven hospice, palliative care, and home health services, supporting patients and families through critical stages of care. As the organization expands its reach across the region, it is investing in philanthropy to strengthen charitable care, deepen community partnerships, and support long‑term sustainability. Its commitment to serving patients regardless of their ability to pay creates a compelling platform for donor engagement.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Vice President of Philanthropy will serve on the senior leadership team and guide all aspects of fundraising strategy, execution, and performance. This leader will evaluate the existing development program, identify growth opportunities, and establish an actionable, data-informed plan to expand major gifts, planned giving, grants, memorial giving, events, and corporate and community support. The VP will oversee four direct reports, coach emerging managers, and work closely with executive leadership and the foundation board to build a strong culture of philanthropy.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, data‑driven philanthropic strategy that expands revenue, diversifies funding sources, and establishes ambitious yet achievable fundraising goals aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the establishment and operationalization of a newly formed philanthropic foundation, including developing fundraising infrastructure, supporting governance, and engaging foundation board members in philanthropic initiatives.
  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, corporate partners, and philanthropic prospects to secure significant annual, planned, and capital gifts, sponsorships, and other charitable contributions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a growing philanthropy team, fostering a collaborative, high‑performing culture grounded in accountability, creativity, professional development, and measurable results.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, partnering closely with the President & CEO, fellow executives, and Board leadership to align philanthropic priorities with organizational goals and advance long‑term financial sustainability.
  • Identify and cultivate new philanthropic opportunities across individual giving, corporate partnerships, foundation grants, memorial giving, planned giving, special events, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Oversee fundraising operations, donor management systems, and performance reporting, leveraging CRM technology and data analytics to strengthen donor engagement, improve operational efficiency, and support sustainable philanthropic growth.
  • Direct departmental budgeting, fundraising performance measurement, and strategic planning, ensuring responsible resource allocation, achievement of financial goals, and continuous improvement in fundraising effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement innovative donor engagement, recognition, and stewardship strategies that deepen relationships with patients' families, caregivers, community partners, and other philanthropic supporters.
  • Represent the organization as a visible and trusted philanthropic leader, building meaningful relationships with community stakeholders, corporate partners, civic leaders, and funding organizations to expand awareness, strengthen partnerships, and advance the organization's mission.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Graduate degree or CFRE designation preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising, advancement, donor development, planned giving, stewardship, and/or strategic relationship‑based sales.
  • Significant progressive fundraising experience, including senior‑level responsibility for strategy, donor relationships, and team leadership.
  • Proven success achieving or exceeding annual fundraising goals, managing development budgets, and leveraging data to evaluate fundraising performance.
  • Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit foundation structures, governance, and operations, with experience establishing, launching, or scaling a philanthropic foundation, including developing fundraising infrastructure, engaging foundation boards, and implementing sustainable development strategies.
  • Experience in hospice or healthcare philanthropy strongly preferred; accomplished nonprofit fundraising leaders from other sectors will also be considered.
  • Strong analytical and business acumen, including the ability to assess performance, build realistic budgets, and translate strategy into results.
  • Collaborative, empowering leadership style; ability to mentor developing managers and operate effectively in a complex, regulated organization.
  • Compelling communication skills, executive presence, and authentic commitment to compassionate, mission‑driven care.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
