Job description

First as The Longevity Fund and since 2023 as age1, we back founders at the earliest stages of building therapeutics, tools, and technologies that increase healthy lifespan. We partner closely with scientists and operators to turn frontier ideas into category-first companies defining the field. Counterfactual impact is a large north star of ours.

We’re a small team with a deeply embedded network and an ambitious mandate: fund the best longevity companies, build the community and talent base the field needs, and do both with a level of rigor and follow-through the category has historically lacked.

About the Role

We are hiring a VP of Operations/COO to manage operations for age1, which includes legacy Longevity Fund vehicles. The COO role is likely on track to become a Partner on a 1-2 year timeline.

The ideal candidate has worked in an operational role at a fast-paced startup for 5-10+ years, or equivalently significant operating experience, ideally but not necessarily including experience operating with a venture fund. The team is currently distributed globally with hubs in San Francisco and Boston. We have a strong preference for on-site, but are open to hybrid/remote arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

You will own fund operations, fundraising, investor relations, portfolio support, community, finance, firm strategy, and the internal operating system that runs the firm. The right person has stood up and led operating systems in a startup or investment firm before, has the confidence to push back on the partners to shape firm-level decisions, and can move between closing an LP, setting the quarter’s priorities with the partners, and running a founder event in the same week.

Investor Relations

• Drive the operations of the fund's next raise. Own the operational process end to end - pipeline, data room preparation, diligence requests, meeting prep, and follow-up.
• Bring in new investor leads through one-on-one meetings and events, and keep every conversation and commitment tracked so nothing gets lost.
• Proactively deepen relationships with existing LPs, and lead the writing of investor updates that are clear and concise.

Financial Operations

• Manage internal age1 operations team and part-time operational support such as CFO/fund admin, tax advisors, audit, payroll, subscriptions, etc.
• Report firm performance to the relevant databases on an ongoing basis.
• Oversee all financial planning, analysis, forecasting, and budgeting.
• Ensure end-to-end finance support across the fund lifecycle and portfolio deal activity
• Own the relationships and ongoing communication with portfolio companies.
• Lead the growth of age1’s platform for portfolio support - helping founders hire, raise subsequent rounds, and access the resources and networks that give them an edge. Build repeatable programs founders across the portfolio can draw on.

Sourcing, Diligence, and Community

• Lead the firm’s community efforts, own the CRM, and support sourcing. This can take many forms: spearhead media, curate and host events, or plan a founder program/fellowship.
• Support the investment team in making efficient, maximally-informed decisions, with an emphasis on portfolio construction and modeling.
• Find and build the non-obvious paths to activate age1’s network with outsized impact. For a path towards Partner, build a track record of contributing directly to investment decisions, with an emphasis on portfolio construction and modeling.

Incubations

• Help lead company formation for NewCo incubations in their 0 to 1 phase, owning set-up of operational platforms: entity registration, standing up finances, establishing governance, etc.
• Help drive negotiation of key agreements linked to the NewCo’s vision for assets or partnerships (investment terms, legal documents, and BD/transactions).
• Help set NewCo vision, and on a path toward Partner, build a track record in contributing to the recruitment of key founding hires plus the production of fundraising materials (e.g., NewCo deck).

Fund Strategy

• Contribute to setting fund priorities and high-level firm initiatives alongside the partners.
• Shape how the firm allocates time, capital, and attention as it scales.

Team Growth and Firm Operations

• Work with the partners to set and execute team development goals.
• Manage the physical office, website, public relations, and community events; own the recruiting process for summer interns and fellows.

Attributes We’re Looking For

• You have a great read on people. Building community, you know exactly who to route to the partners. With LPs, co-investors, and portfolio companies, you have a sharp instinct for what they need and how they’re feeling.
• Operational excellence: nothing drops. You cross the t’s and dot the i's without being asked. Things don’t slip despite every best intention of the GP’s chaos. You keep the trains running on time with little oversight, and you’re skilled at managing up.
• You build systems with judgment, not just to-do lists. You’ve owned complex, cross-functional work with minimal existing infrastructure and turned informal processes into things that scale. You can make the call without waiting for detailed instructions.
• No job is beneath you or above you, uninteresting, or out of your abilities. You are happy subbing in wherever the firm needs it, and you don’t see logistical execution as separate from senior operating work. You like organizing events (even if it means last minute Uber Eats-ing drinks or a whiteboard) and you don’t mind supporting portfolio companies with ops, such as helping them file documents or set up payroll.
• You’re financially fluent. Budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting are comfortable territory, and you can hold your own on fund mechanics.
• You write well. You produce concise, high-quality materials for investors, founders, and senior stakeholders, and you default to clear written communication.
• You can push back. Low ego, high confidence, and high integrity - you execute the partners’ vision and you have the conviction to tell them when you think they’re wrong.
• You care about the mission. You have a passion for longevity and biotech, and are invested in the future of the fund.

• You want a narrowly defined role with stable, predictable responsibilities.
• You’re most comfortable operating inside mature systems someone else built.
• You want to advise on operations without being accountable for implementation.
• You need frequent partner direction to prioritize and finish work.

• You add process for its own sake, without asking if it improves speed or judgment.
