Job summary

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is seeking a Manager of Volunteer Programs to lead and expand the volunteer program. The role oversees recruitment, training, scheduling, and recognition, working closely with Garden staff to deliver mission-aligned experiences for volunteers.

The ideal candidate will be an engaging speaker, creative thinker, and relationship builder, with bilingual skills highly desirable. This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Director of Development.

Qualifications

• Experience managing volunteers or staff and coordinating programs.
• Strong organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to recruit, train, and retain volunteers and manage records.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, screen, train, place, and schedule volunteers; provide orientation.
• Meet with staff to adapt opportunities to organizational needs.
• Explain policies and standards of volunteer service, promoting DEI commitments.
• Respond to inquiries from prospective volunteers and staff.
• Maintain records and provide reporting on volunteers.
• Manage all volunteer activity and scheduling; calendar management.
• Supervise volunteers and assign tasks; support staff as needed.
• Ensure background checks comply with CA laws and policies.
• Evaluate volunteer performance and address issues promptly.
• Develop volunteer opportunities, write descriptions, and assess efficacy.
• Train staff to work with volunteers and ensure good fit between volunteers and assignments.
• Provide annual staff/volunteer training and monthly educational sessions.
• Plan and execute volunteer events and recognition activities.
• Update the volunteer handbook as needed.
• Coordinate corporate volunteer days and student/community programs.
