These activities are designed to build skills in a supportive social environment that participants might not find elsewhere. The key idea here is that SPARC is not just about recreational activities; it’s about helping individuals develop critical life skills in a safe, nurturing community.
  • Goals:
  • The organization serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across a broad age range—from young children to adults. By offering a variety of recreational, artistic, athletic, and wellness programs, SPARC ensures that individuals with IDD have access to holistic services designed by a team of skilled professionals. This diversity of offerings allows participants to gain confidence, independence, and new skills.

Role of the Board Member:

SPARC is seekingtwo new Board membersto join their leadership team. The job of a Board member is both strategic and hands-on, involving a blend of governance and active engagement in fundraising and organizational development.

Board Responsibilities:

  • Meetings and Attendance:Board members are required to attend75% of virtual meetings(held monthly from September to June). This is essential because the meetings are where important decisions are made, and active participation will help shape the future direction of the organization.
  • Committee Involvement:Every board member must participate in one of the following committees:
  • Finance: Focuses on budgeting, financial strategy, and ensuring the organization is financially stable.
  • Development: Oversees fundraising activities, donor relationships, and the growth of the organization’s financial resources.
  • Fundraising Expectations:Board members are expected to actively support SPARC’s fundraising efforts. Specifically, they need to raise at least$1,000 annuallythrough a combination of methods:
  • Personal donations
  • Securing in-kind donations(e.g., donations of goods or services) This requirement emphasizes the importance of Board members being both advocates and financial contributors to the organization.
  • Program and Event Participation:Board members are asked tovisit programs and events at least twice a year. This hands-on engagement helps Board members stay connected with the work they are overseeing and gives them a direct sense of how SPARC is fulfilling its mission.
  • Term Length:Board members are expected to serve forone three-year term, with an option to renew for a second and final term. This structure ensures that there’s both stability and fresh perspectives on the Board over time.

Skills and Experience Sought:

  • SPARC is particularly interested in candidates with experience inMarketing,Fundraising,Finance, and/orSocial Services. These areas of expertise are vital for guiding the organization in its growth and sustainability, especially as it continues to provide OPWDD services (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) to eligible individuals.
