Job summary

The University of Chicago is seeking a Communications Technician to maintain and repair voice equipment across campuses and the UChicago Medical Center. You will provide Tier 1–2 support, participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, and work with voice engineers, inventory staff, and vendors on projects.

Applicants should have a high school diploma, an electronics-related degree, and at least three years of voice systems troubleshooting experience; Cisco UC tools knowledge and ServiceNow experience

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree in electronics or related field; technical school graduate preferred.
  • Minimum three years of experience troubleshooting voice communications infrastructure (voice gateways, carrier circuits, DMARC).
  • Background in academic and/or healthcare environments preferred.
  • I.B.E.W. Local 134 Communications Technicians in good standing; valid driver’s license.
  • Familiar with Cisco UC Manager and Unity; knowledge of UCCX and call center tools is preferred.
  • Experience with ITSM ticketing (ServiceNow) and documenting incidents.
  • Proficiency with basic computer/hardware test equipment and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Make decisions beyond established procedures when needed.
  • Monitor, diagnose, and repair voice networks, equipment, and software.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance.
  • Diagnose carrier-related issues and report status.
  • Open and track tickets with carriers; follow up to completion.
  • Assist carriers with access to University closets and equipment.
  • Install communications equipment to board level as instructed.
  • Collaborate with voice engineers, inventory staff, network team, and vendors.
  • Respond to customer questions about features and functions of the system.
  • Document incidents in ServiceNow with complete history and details.
  • Maintain documentation of maintenance activity and parts usage.
  • Monitor inventory and alert when supplies are needed.
  • Mentor new technicians in training and procedures.
  • Provide coverage for remote sites (Ingalls, Northwest Indiana, etc.).
  • Maintain orderly work areas; participate in special projects as needed.
