Job description

Position Summary


The team lead acts as an ambassador, driver, and guide for the clinical and educational missions in Internal Medicine within the AMPATH consortium, connecting North American, European, and Kenyan institutions. Residing full-time in Eldoret, Kenya, their primary focus is capacity building through workforce development and delivering high-quality care, collaborating closely with faculty, residents, and students from Kenya, North America, and Europe to foster a respectful learning environment.


This role is supported by the Indiana University Center for Global Health Equity (IUCGHE) and the IU Department of Medicine. The team lead will hold appointments as a Visiting Assistant Professor at IU School of Medicine and a Visiting Lecturer at Moi University School of Medicine.


This is a 2-year position.


Supervisor


The clinical education lead reports to the IUCGHE Director and Director of Education, with daily activities managed by the AMPATH Executive Site Director. For responsibilities related to Moi University, they will also report to the Head of Department of Internal Medicine at Moi University.


Service Duties


Clinical Duties

  • Participate in clinical care at MTRH, leading bedside teaching and rounds for Kenyan registrars and medical students.
  • Work in outpatient clinics within the MOH or MTRH systems.
  • Provide inpatient consultation as assigned, with a minimum of 3-4 months per year.
  • Participate in on-call rotations.
  • Engage in care initiatives as directed by departmental or hospital leadership.

Medical care for adult guests at IU House

  • Discuss medical issues with adults with chronic conditions prior to visits.
  • Provide urgent care or facilitate access to local hospitals/clinics.
  • Maintain medical supplies at IU House.
  • Manage HIV exposure cases following PEP protocols.
  • Update emergency SOPs as needed.

Faculty Duties

AMPATH Ambassador

  • Participate in AMPATH meetings and maintain SOPs.
  • Report on educational and clinical activities.

Indiana University Department of Medicine Member

  • Respond to department requests and maintain communication.
  • Support educational, research, and programmatic efforts, fostering relationships between investigators.
  • Host IU visitors interested in Internal Medicine.

Visiting Lecturer at Moi University

  • Attend departmental meetings and assist with exams.
  • Facilitate teaching and supervise research projects.

Educational Duties

  • Assist with global health educational activities, including orientation and evaluations.
  • Oversee the Slemenda Scholars program.
  • Coordinate visiting learners and lead educational activities.
  • Mentor Kenyan students and registrars.

Scholarly and Development Work

Engage in scholarly activities aligned with career interests, such as program development, evaluation, research, and curriculum development.
