Building Colorado's Future Together is seeking an Executive Director to lead the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment in the Office of the Governor. The role drives strategy, programs, and the department’s mission to protect and improve health and environmental quality in Colorado.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in public health, environmental health, public administration, law, medicine, or a closely related field
• Five+ years of professional executive management experience in public or environmental health, including budgeting
• Five+ years of experience improving processes in large organizations
• Five+ years of experience leading regulatory, permitting, or enforcement programs in public health or environmental protection
• Five+ years of experience managing programs funded by federal agencies
• Experience building relationships with diverse stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Oversee department operations and align with Governor’s goals and stakeholder expectations
• Direct and manage the department’s budget and ensure fiscal discipline
• Build and lead a high-performing team with effective coaching and development
• Administer department and divisions under authority of key commissions and boards
• Appoint directors for key state offices and initiatives
• Strengthen air and water quality monitoring, permitting, and enforcement
• Oversee public health initiatives including disease control, vital records, and health data
• Direct emergency public health response and build resilient infrastructure
• Partner with local health agencies, hospitals, Tribal health programs, and regulated industries
• Support community-based prevention efforts
• Brief Governor’s Office on policy issues from state and federal activities
• Engage with the General Assembly and manage responses to proposed legislation
