Job summary

The American Library Association seeks a full-time Executive Director for the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division dedicated to empowering leaders in the school library field. This role is based in our Chicago office with a hybrid work schedule.

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree required; MLIS or related graduate degree preferred.
• Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible management experience in an association, non-profit, or member-driven environment.
• Experience supervising and managing strong staff teams.
• Demonstrated credibility and expertise within school librarianship or related educational fields preferred.
• Regular travel, some evenings or weekends may be required.

Responsibilities

• Lead the advancement of the AASL strategic plan in alignment with ALA’s broader vision.
• Monitor trends to guide programs, services, publications and advocacy.
• Represent school librarians and AASL within ALA and with external partners.
• Support and coordinate governance, planning and committee work.
• Provide strategic financial leadership and manage the AASL budget and events.
