Job summary

American Library Association in Chicago seeks a full-time Executive Director for the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) to provide strategic vision, operational leadership, and financial stewardship. The role works closely with the ALA Executive staff and the AASL Board to advance a national agenda for school librarians and K-12 education.

Starting salary range is negotiable from $135k based on experience, with a comprehensive benefits package including flexible schedules,

Qualifications

• A four-year college or university degree required.
• An MLIS or other graduate-level degree with relevance to the position preferred.
• Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible management experience in an association, non-profit, or other member- or customer-driven environment is strongly preferred.
• Experience supervising and managing strong staff teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic leadership and vision aligned with ALA and AASL priorities.
• Support and collaborate with the AASL Board, staff, and volunteers on governance and strategic planning.
• Represent AASL within ALA and externally, building partnerships with educators and stakeholders.
• Provide financial and operational oversight, including budget planning and revenue opportunities.
