Job Title: Vision Services Assistant

Department: Special Education

Education Level and Certification: Degree in Education or similar field preferred, some college and/or experience working with individuals with disabilities or in the field of special education is required.

Reports To: Director Special Education

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks

The Vision Services Assistant is responsible for on-site technology set up and student support for virtual Teacher of the Visually Impaired services. The VSA will travel from district to district, based on a schedule created by the TVI or program supervisor, access Zoom links and meetings, and provide hands‑on student support while students are receiving vision services. The VSA may be asked to track student performance data on goals and objectives, prepare materials, and provide written information to IFSP teams, IEP teams, the supervising TVI, classroom teachers, and/or families.

  • Promotes a positive image of ESU 13.
  • Prepares session or student materials at the direction of the supervising TVI.
  • Prepares, sets up, connects to, and facilitates virtual Zoom sessions and meetings.
  • Implements appropriate intervention strategies for students under the supervision of a TVI.
  • Collects, analyzes, and summarizes data from individual and group vision sessions for the TVI and/or IFSP/IEP teams.
  • Manages behavior and sensory needs using appropriately‑designed management techniques.
  • Teaches, demonstrates and instructs the student and school district staff on the goals and progress of a student in the areas identified on the IEP.
  • Conducts carry‑over activities to transfer a student’s accommodations or learned strategies to other contexts and situations.
  • Refs questions about diagnosis, evaluation, or re‑evaluation of a student to the TVI.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and family information as required by Nebraska Department of Education Rule 51 and Rule 52 and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Utilizes resources to effectively communicate with others with different communication abilities (e.g. non‑English speaking, hearing impaired).
  • Seeks out and participates in appropriate staff development activities to maintain and improve professional skills.
  • Displays appropriate interpersonal skills to effectively work with teachers, team members, administrators, and parents.

Working Conditions

  • Inside heated and air conditioned classroom.
  • Outside for activities with students and student supervision.
  • Exposure to incidents of aggression when working with students with behavioral impairments.

At-Will Position. This position is an “at-will” position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the ESU 13 Administrator or ESU 13 Administrator’s designee.
