Position Overview
The Vision Itinerant Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments across multiple school sites. This educator ensures that students receive equitable access to the curriculum by addressing individual needs through direct instruction, adaptations, and collaboration with school teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Instruction:
    • Teach Braille reading and writing.
    • Provide instruction in the use of assistive technology, including:
      • Braille notetakers
      • Magnification software and devices
      • Talking calculators
      • CD players and other accessible audio formats
    • Teach visual efficiency skills (e.g., fixation, tracking, scanning).
    • Provide instruction in keyboarding, computer use, and general visual-motor integration.
    • Deliver instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum, including orientation and mobility, self-determination, and social interaction skills.
  • Curriculum and Materials Support:
    • Provide adapted instructional materials, including ordering large print and Braille textbooks.
    • Complete Learning Media Assessments (LMAs) to determine students' preferred learning modalities.
    • Order or adapt assessments suitable for students with visual impairments.
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
    • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
    • Attend and contribute to IEP meetings, staff meetings, and evaluation team discussions.
    • Serve as a liaison between parents, students, and school teams.
    • Consult with school staff regarding environmental modifications such as lighting, seating, and emergency drill procedures.
    • Provide in-service training and professional development for staff and students.
  • Progress Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress on IEP goals.
    • Submit regular goal progress reports.
    • Assist in the evaluation and re-evaluation process for students with visual impairments.

Qualifications

  • Valid teaching license with appropriate endorsement in Visual Impairments.
  • Knowledge of Braille and assistive technologies for the visually impaired.
  • Experience with the Expanded Core Curriculum and instructional strategies for low-vision and blind students.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
