Job description

We are seeking a Video Production Manager, who will report to the 555 Penn IT/AV Assistant Director of Performance Activities. The Video Production Manager is responsible for managing all video technical aspects of broadcast studio and concert events at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, for the 375-seat theater and multimedia studio center for video recordings. The Video Production Manager will support a variety of events including music and dance performances from the Peabody Institute to lectures and presentations and University Symposia.

The Video Production Manager acts as a liaison to all Johns Hopkins divisions and among the various individuals involved in video production, to ensure excellent and safe production. The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive, client-oriented leader. The candidate will be organized and provide excellent customer service experience for clients. Attention to detail, customer service focus and a positive work ethic are a must. Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends as needed to appropriately staff departmental activities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides a professional and safe performance environment to the 555 Penn students, faculty, staff, patrons, and guests.
  • Manages a team of two or more video technician staff members in supporting video recordings in the broadcast studio and stage events.
  • Supports all video production technical requirements for performances at 555 Penn and multimedia studio events to include lighting, audio visual, administrative, live video production and mixing, sound reinforcement, and setting up A/V equipment, microphones, and stage management.
  • Supports live and pre-recorded productions for special event webcasts in a variety of locations near 555 Penn in Washington, DC.
  • Collaborates with Audio Production Manager and team for events that require audio and video recording.
  • Works in close partnership with representatives from various JHU divisions and outside renters to support video event production, audio visual, sound, and curricular needs of the school to achieve an excellent video production quality.
  • Supervises and administers production crew and scheduling events with the appropriate number of staff and with the necessary skill set and training.
  • Supervises video technical staff training and evaluating performance.
  • Creates and develops necessary policies and procedures to improve the production department's ability to support the schools' events.
  • Enforces safety standards and preventative maintenance and training programs, enforcing school-wide policy and procedures while making recommendations as necessary.
  • Acts as primary contact for offsite video production needs regarding logistics and arrangements for ensembles and operas.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Three years of related experience, with some supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of broadcast studio and management experience shooting and editing video for television, film, or web, working with various video editing systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of broadcast studio production, video mixing, sound reinforcement stage production.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Capable of producing video rough cuts, graphic design and integration, audio sweetening, color correction and deliver final projects for live streaming or post-processing.
  • Edit video using a variety editing systems including Avid, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends as needed to appropriately staff departmental activities and the performance schedule.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook, required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
