Connecting Engineering and BESS & E-Mobility Talent

Role: VP of Software Engineering

Location: Remote (USA)

Salary: $250K-$300K + bonus + equity

Piper Maddox are working with an industry leader in grid scale BESS space on a confidential VP of Software Engineering hire reporting directly to the CEO. They will lead the design, development, and delivery of their software systems that operate, monitor, and optimize utility-scale BESS Products.

You will also build and manage a cross-functional engineering team and work closely with stakeholders to deliver innovative software solutions that enhance system performance, user experience, and overall business value.

Technical & Strategic Leadership

• Define the software vision, architecture, and technical roadmap in support of grid-tied applications such as frequency regulation, resource adequacy, peak shaving, energy arbitrage, and VPP integration.
• Ensure software supports grid compliance and interoperability

Team & Organizational Development

• Build, lead, and mentor a high-performance cross-functional engineering team
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, quality assurance, and continuous innovation.

Product Development & Delivery

• Lead the development of our flagship BESS software suite, including:
• Real-time control firmware for inverters, BMS, and site controllers
• Edge gateways and local EMS with on-site intelligence
• Cloud-hosted platforms for visualization, asset monitoring, and command/control

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with the Hardware, Power Systems, and Grid Integration teams to ensure that software and controls integrate with battery modules, PCS, and grid interconnect equipment.
• Collaborate with Product, Sales, and Project Delivery to align software capabilities with evolving customer and market requirements.

Qualifications & Experience :

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience with 4+ years in senior leadership within grid-scale BESS space

Deep understanding of:

• SCADA and energy control systems
• Real-time and distributed system design
• Cloud infrastructure and DevOps (e.g., AWS/GCP, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
• Cybersecurity best practices for critical infrastructure
• Experience delivering DER or BESS software platforms integrated with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or DERMS platforms.
