Job description

MPG is partnering with a clinical-stage biotechnology company hiring for a Head of FP&A. This is a rare chance to shape how a growing biotech allocates capital, tells its financial story to investors, and makes its biggest decisions, while staying close to the numbers.

Role overview

The VP of FP&A owns the company's budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning and financial analysis as they prepare for a potential public offering. The VP of FP&A will be a trusted partner to the CEO, CFO and executive team on strategy, capital allocation and business planning.

This role is both strategic and hands-on. With a lean team, you will build the models, run the forecast and prepare the board materials yourself, as well as set the direction. They want someone who is as comfortable in a detailed Excel model on Tuesday as in a leadership offsite on Thursday.

Key responsibilities

Strategic planning and leadership partnership

  • Partner with the CEO, CFO and executive team on corporate strategy, portfolio prioritization and major investment decisions.
  • Lead the long-range plan (LRP), including scenario and sensitivity analysis on clinical timelines, program sequencing and funding needs.
  • Model cash runway and capital strategy, supporting decisions on financing, partnerships and business development.
  • Provide financial analysis for strategic initiatives such as licensing deals, collaborations, in-licensing and build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Prepare and present financial materials for the Board of Directors and its committees.

Hands-on FP&A execution

  • Personally own the annual operating plan, quarterly reforecasts and monthly budget-versus-actual analysis.
  • Build and maintain the company's core financial models, including the integrated three-statement model.
  • Build the forecasting, budgeting and reporting processes a public company requires.
  • Support a potential IPO process, including the financial model, investor presentation, S-1 inputs and work with bankers, auditors and counsel.
  • Develop the framework for external guidance, investor communications and earnings preparation after the IPO.
  • Partner with R&D, Clinical Operations, CMC and G&A leaders on program budgets, headcount plans and spend tracking.
  • Forecast and track clinical trial costs and spend, working closely with Accounting.
  • Deliver clear, timely analysis that explains variances and recommends action.

Team and systems

  • Lead, mentor and grow a small team of 1–2 staff while doing much of the work alongside them.
  • Select and implement planning tools and systems as the company scales.
  • Improve data quality and reporting across Finance, working closely with Accounting and the Controller.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field.
  • 12+ years of progressive FP&A or corporate finance experience, including 4+ years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in biotech or life sciences, with a solid grasp of R&D-stage economics and clinical trial cost drivers.
  • A track record of hands-on work: building complex financial models from scratch and owning the forecast end to end.
  • Experience presenting to executive teams and boards, and turning analysis into clear recommendations.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Comfort in a fast-paced, resource-lean setting where priorities shift as programs evolve.
