About the Opportunity
We are recruiting a VP of Platform Engineering for a rapidly growing, profitable, venture-backed AI company transforming financial services through advanced agentic AI technology.
The company develops production-scale AI solutions for banks and financial institutions, enabling intelligent automation, conversational AI, and sophisticated customer engagement across voice and digital channels.
With approximately $30 million in contracted annual recurring revenue, hundreds of financial institution customers, and a platform reaching more than 10 million people, the company offers an exceptional opportunity to lead engineering at a critical stage of growth.
This is a highly technical, hands‑on executive leadership position for an experienced engineering leader who thrives in fast-paced startup environments.
You will work directly with the CEO and CTO to define technical strategy, build scalable AI infrastructure, and lead the platform engineering organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and expand the platform engineering organization, beginning with an existing team of approximately four engineers.
- Own the architecture and development of the company's AI-native platform infrastructure.
- Design and scale production-grade agentic AI systems, including agent runtimes, LLM orchestration, retrieval systems, evaluation frameworks, and agent-authoring platforms.
- Remain actively involved in software development, code reviews, technical architecture, and complex engineering decisions.
- Build scalable distributed systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and reliable production environments.
- Establish engineering standards for performance, reliability, observability, security, and scalability.
- Collaborate directly with the CEO and CTO on product releases, platform strategy, and new technical initiatives.
- Drive engineering velocity through modern AI-assisted development tools and practices.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop high‑performing engineering teams.
- Guide the organization through significant growth in revenue, customers, engineering headcount, and platform complexity.
- Develop a culture of technical excellence, accountability, ownership, and continuous innovation.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, preferably with 4–6+ years in technical leadership.
- Current or recent experience as a VP of Engineering, CTO, Head of Engineering, or senior platform engineering leader.
- Proven experience scaling engineering teams and platforms at high‑growth, venture‑backed startups, ideally from Series A/B through Series C/D.
- Demonstrated ownership of production‑scale agentic AI, LLM infrastructure, conversational AI, or machine learning platforms.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud architecture, API design, and scalable backend infrastructure.
- Strong hands‑on programming experience with Python and/or TypeScript.
- Ability to remain technically engaged through coding, pull request reviews, architecture design, and engineering problem‑solving.
- Experience building and operating reliable AI‑powered systems in production.
- Strong understanding of LLM orchestration, retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), evaluation frameworks, and AI platform operations.
- Experience leading multiple engineering teams and developing technical leaders.
- Familiarity with AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and other modern AI‑assisted engineering platforms.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related STEM discipline.
- Ability to work on‑site in San Francisco five days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience scaling an engineering organization through multiple venture funding stages, including measurable revenue and headcount growth.
- Background in high‑growth AI infrastructure, enterprise AI, or fintech startups.
- Experience with conversational AI, voice AI, and multi‑agent architectures.
- Familiarity with regulated financial services, banking infrastructure, compliance, and security.
- Experience developing AI evaluation pipelines, orchestration frameworks, and production monitoring systems.
