In addition to the responsibilities outlined below, the Surgical Veterinary Technician is an invaluable member of the hospital team who works directly with the Veterinarian and supporting medical staff to ensure productive and quality veterinary care at all times.
Job Responsibilities
- Ability to create and explain medical care plans to clients. As outlined, additional information can be asked by the Veterinarian in charge of the surgery or recommending the surgery.
- Email medical care plans, and confirm surgical procedures with clients. See attached protocol.
- Assist the Veterinarian during examination of animals, providing restraint as needed to work safely and effectively.
- Understand the surgical procedures performed or drop-offs for each patient and review the medical history of each patient.
- Check in patients to AviMark and record client communication and weights for each patient.
- Provide restraint as needed to work safely and effectively.
- Communicate with the team regarding any client concerns, medical history, or observations noted during interactions with clients and patients.
- Understand medication usage, storage, drug ranges, routes, handling, and log all drugs used accurately.
- Calculate drug dosages accurately to ensure effective treatment.
- Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
- Perform routine anesthetic dental cleanings under the Veterinarian's direction.
- Administer anesthesia, monitor vital signs every 5 minutes, and care for animals recovering from anesthesia.
- Manage pain appropriately, knowing which medications to use based on pre-existing conditions, dosing, and administration.
- Obtain dental and full-body radiographs with proper positioning and technique; troubleshoot imaging equipment as needed.
The base hourly range for this position is $19.00 - $26.00. Pay is determined by role, level, location, skills, experience, and training.
