Veterinary Technician – Oncology Lead

Full-time: Monday-Thursday 7am-5pm

Location: Austin, TX

Pet Specialists of Austin is looking for a Lead Oncology Veterinary Technician to join our team as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.

About You

The Lead Oncology Veterinary Technician is responsible for veterinary nursing duties and providing direction to staff. The role requires knowledge across various areas, including client service, communication, clinical pathology, radiology, nursing care, anesthesia, and chemotherapy. The technician should uphold hospital values and manage time effectively, balancing on-floor and administrative duties at an 80:20 ratio.

Our Ideal Candidate:
  • Credentials (RVT, CVT, LVT) preferred
  • Prior supervisory/management experience preferred
  • 3-5 years experience as a veterinary technician
  • Customer service experience required
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare patient records, admit, and discharge patients; delegate staff as needed
  • Handle calls and schedule appointments
  • Promote a positive work environment aligned with hospital values
  • Train staff to improve knowledge and skills
  • Utilize logs for controlled drugs, radiology, surgery, etc.
  • Maintain stocked supplies and hospital cleanliness
Nursing/Patient Care:
  • Assess patient status, take histories, perform exams, assist veterinarians
  • Monitor patient conditions and report changes
  • Perform emergency care, calculate and administer medications, perform cystocentesis, place urinary catheters, venipuncture, administer fluids, and chart appropriately
  • Apply bandages
Laboratory Procedures:
  • Operate lab equipment and perform analyses
  • Conduct in-house tests such as PCV/TP, Heartworm, FIV/FeLV, etc.
Radiology Duties:
  • Follow safety protocols, obtain radiographs, utilize ultrasound and CT imaging
Anesthesia/Surgical Duties:
  • Perform pre-op exams, assist with anesthesia, operate anesthesia equipment, intubate, monitor, maintain equipment, respond to emergencies, and sterilize surgical tools
Administrative/Leadership:
  • Manage staff workflows, handle inefficiencies, oversee scheduling, ensure professional behavior, delegate tasks, and promote staff development
Oncology Specific Responsibilities:
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy medications, protocols, and administration techniques
  • Perform chemotherapy treatments, drug calculations, safe handling, and disposal
  • Communicate effectively with clients about treatments and side effects
Physical and General Requirements:
  • Dependable attendance, ability to lift 40 pounds, work under pressure, and perform physical tasks
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively
  • Operate hospital and office equipment
