Veterinary Technician - Oncology Lead

Full-time: Monday-Thursday 7am-5pm

Pet Specialists of Austin is looking for a Lead Oncology Veterinary Technician to join our team as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.

About You

The Lead Oncology Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing veterinary nursing duties and guiding fellow veterinary technicians and assistants. The ideal candidate should be knowledgeable across various areas including client service, communication, clinical pathology, radiology, animal nursing care, anesthesia, and chemotherapy handling/administration. Upholding the hospital's core values and maintaining professional composure are essential. The role balances on-floor duties with administrative responsibilities at an 80:20 ratio.

Our Ideal Candidate:
  • Credentials (RVT, CVT, LVT) preferred
  • Prior supervisory/management experience preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience as a veterinary technician
  • Prior customer service experience required
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare patient records, admit, and discharge patients; delegate tasks as needed
  • Handle calls and schedule appointments
  • Promote a positive work environment aligned with hospital values
  • Train staff to enhance their skills and knowledge
  • Maintain logs for controlled drugs, radiology, surgery, etc.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked and the hospital environment is clean
Nursing/Patient Care:
  • Assess patient status, take histories, perform tech exams, assist vets
  • Monitor patient conditions and report changes
  • Provide emergency care as needed
  • Calculate and administer medications, perform cystocentesis, place urinary catheters, venipuncture, administer fluids, chart appropriately, apply bandages
Laboratory Procedures:
  • Operate lab equipment, perform microscopy, in-house testing
Radiology Duties:
  • Follow safety protocols, obtain radiographs, use ultrasound and CT as directed
Anesthesia/Surgical Duties:
  • Pre-op exams, assist with anesthesia, operate anesthesia equipment, intubate, monitor, maintain equipment, respond to emergencies, prepare surgical packs
Administrative/Leadership:
  • Manage workflow, staff schedules, and performance
  • Address inefficiencies and staff issues
  • Model professional behavior and support staff development
  • Delegate tasks and assist with nursing duties as needed
Oncology Specific Responsibilities:
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy medications, protocols, and handling
  • Perform treatments, drug calculations, prepare drugs safely
  • Administer chemotherapy via various methods
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials, communicate with clients regarding treatments and side effects
Physical and General Requirements:
  • Dependable attendance, ability to lift 40 pounds, work under high pressure
  • Walk, bend, stand, reach during shifts, maintain accurate records, communicate effectively, operate equipment
