A BluePearl Oncology Technician is someone who is self-motivated, a quick thinker, and able to multi-task efficiently. Good communication skills and compassion are essential. Preferably, candidates should have a minimum of two or more years' experience in a specialty veterinary hospital. The right candidate will be responsible for treating and monitoring patients, supporting clinicians with patient care, and communicating effectively with clients.
As an Oncology Technician, you will:
- Perform physical exams; accurately assess heart rate, pulse, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate, and effort.
- Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert the doctor to abnormalities.
- Perform phlebotomy.
- Place peripheral intravenous catheters in the cephalic vein.
- Calculate basic medical math.
- Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration.
- Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
- Safely dispense, reconstitute, and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
- Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
- Properly shave and wrap for IV catheter placement for chemotherapy infusion.
- Have knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and appropriate response procedures.
- Admit oncology patients and obtain thorough histories, including current medications, responses to treatment, side effects, and treatment duration.
- Discharge oncology patients, providing basic client education on handling patient eliminations, oral chemotherapy at home, side effects, and medication administration.
- Maintain a solid understanding of veterinary medical terms and abbreviations for effective communication with professionals.
- Address client concerns appropriately during visits, updates, or post-hospitalization, and facilitate incoming calls efficiently.
- Have knowledge of tumor types and understand diagnostic work-up protocols specific to oncology.
- Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with ASA I or II classified patients.
- Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in assigned roles.
- Maintain hospital operations, including stocking and cleaning.
