Job description

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Sandy Springs, GA, is hiring an extraordinary Oncology Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant! A sign on bonus is available for credentialed technicians!

Pay: $18 - $42 / hour

This pay band is a starting point and is dependent on experience, credentials and advancement through our CareerTrax leveling system.

As an Oncology Veterinary Technician, you will:

  • Perform physical exam; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
  • Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert doctor when abnormal.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • Place peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein.
  • Calculate basic medical math.
  • Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration.
  • Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
  • Safely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
  • Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
  • Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion.
  • Have knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and what to do if it happens.
  • Admit Oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration.
  • Discharge Oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as how to handle patient eliminations after chemotherapy, how to handle oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects and oral medication administration.
  • Maintain solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and be able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.
  • Address client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization. Quickly and competently facilitate incoming calls.
  • Have knowledge of the tumor types.
  • Understand diagnostic work-up protocols (including oncology specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital’s protocol).
  • Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications.
  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
  • Maintain hospital for day to day function and operation (stocking, cleaning, etc.).
