Job summary

The Nashville Zoo seeks an experienced Veterinary Technician for our new 24,000 sq ft Veterinary Hospital. You will support two veterinarians, a Hospital Manager, and a team to provide care for 400+ species, including anesthesia, diagnostics, and lab work.

Qualifications

• Graduate veterinary technician degree or equivalent.
• Tennessee State License or able to license within nine months.
• Minimum two years experience as a veterinary technician with exotics, zoo medicine focus.
• Strong laboratory skills.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain professional conduct and uphold the organization’s values.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Monitor anesthetized animals using medical equipment and interpret results.
• Assist staff veterinarians with emergency recognition and care.
• Provide intensive care for critical animals under veterinary direction.
• Care for hospitalized and quarantined patients; assist with treatments.
• Perform basic animal handling and assist with procedures.
• Maintain medical records and daily logs; support interns’ training.

Skills

Ability to self-direct work tasks

Education

Veterinary Technician degree

Tennessee State License or eligibility

2+ years exotics/zoo medicine experience

Strong laboratory skills

Strong organizational skills

Excellent written and verbal communication
