Job summary

Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an Internal Medicine Equine Technician to assist in diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions in horses. You will work closely with board-certified specialists and veterinary students to deliver high-quality care in a state-of-the-art facility.

This full-time role runs Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with possible extended hours on weekends or holidays.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field required.
• 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or care of animals.
• Active license with Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine or eligibility to licensure within 6 months.
• Prior equine experience is desired.

Responsibilities

• Assist with examination, treatment, and monitoring of equine patients.
• Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures such as sample collection, ultrasound, endoscopy, and radiography.
• Administer medications, IV fluids, vaccinations, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
• Monitor patients’ vital signs, responses to treatment, and overall progress.
• Communicate with horse owners regarding conditions, plans, and care instructions.
• Maintain accurate medical records, histories, and billing charges.
• Collaborate with veterinary students, interns, and staff to support educational activities.
• Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of equipment and facilities.

Overview

The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an InternalMedicine Equine Technician that will assist in diagnosing andtreating complex medical conditions in horses.

As a Veterinary Technician in our Equine Internal Medicine Service,you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care tohorses with a variety of internal medical conditions. You will workclosely with our board-certified specialists and veterinarystudents to ensure that each patient receives the best possibletreatment. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be atthe forefront of equine medicine, working in a state-of-the-artfacility.

This position is Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Someflexibility is required as schedule may involve working beyond 5:00p.m., some weekends, and/or holidays.

About the Service

The Equine Internal Medicine service specializes in the diagnosisand treatment of horses with a variety of clinical conditions. Theservice provides diagnostic evaluations, hospitalization, andintensive care management of horses needing 24-hour therapy,diagnosis and treatment of emergency conditions, and routinepreventative health care. The aim of the equine internal medicineservice is to provide the horses with outstanding care and toprovide their owners with compassionate, exceptional service. Theequine internal medicine service utilizes a variety ofstate-of-the-art equipment for advanced diagnostics in equinepatients.

This position involves direct contact with animals susceptibleto rabies. Employees in this role must complete a rabiespre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabiesantibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDCguidelines.

Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccinationseries, periodic titer checks, and any necessaryboosters.

Responsibilities

Working directly within the Equine Internal Medicine Service,the hired individual will be responsible for:

• Patient Care: Assist with the examination, treatment,and monitoring of equine patients, including handling andrestraining horses safely and effectively.
• Diagnostic Procedures: Perform and assist withdiagnostic procedures such as sample collection, ultrasound,endoscopy, and radiography.
• Treatment Administration: Administer medications, IVfluids, vaccinations, and other treatments as prescribed byveterinarians.
• Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs,responses to treatment, and overall progress, providing updates toveterinarians and adjusting care as needed.
• Client Communication: Communicate effectively with horseowners regarding their horses’ conditions, treatment plans, andcare instructions.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medicalrecords, including patient histories, treatment plans, and billingcharges.
• Collaboration: Work collaboratively with veterinarystudents, interns, and other staff to provide comprehensive careand support for educational activities.
• Facility Maintenance: Ensure the cleanliness and propermaintenance of medical equipment, treatment areas, and generalhospital facilities.

Qualifications

Level II:

• Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a relatedfield.
• 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the careand comfort of animals.

Level III:

• Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a relatedfield.
• 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the careand comfort of animals.

Minimum Licence and Certifications

• Active license with the Alabama State Board of VeterinaryMedicine as a Veterinary Technician, OR
• Have met all requirements to become licensed in the State ofAlabama. Licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hiredate.

Substitutions Allowed for Experience

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the requiredexperience, they may normally apply additional appropriateeducation toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1)year relevant education per year of required experience.

Desired Qualifications

Prior equine experience or familiarity with horse care and handlingis desired.
