Job summary

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Veterinary Technician Specialist – Equine Internal Medicine to provide patient care, exams, meds, and continuous monitoring for equine patients across emergency, medicine, surgery and theriogenology services.

This role also involves direct instruction of senior veterinary students and staff in technical aspects of patient care, with duties extending to welfare monitoring of university-owned horses and research animals.

Qualifications

  • License as Veterinary Technician in Alabama is required upon hire.
  • Specialty license or eligibility to become Certified Veterinary Technician within 180 days.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct veterinary students and staff in equine patient care and procedures.
  • Assist clinicians with admissions, patient restraint, and diagnostics for equine cases.
  • Provide direct patient care including exams, medication administration, blood/urine/fecal collection, and fluid therapy.

Overview

The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Veterinary Technician Specialist – Equine Internal Medicine position. This position will provide patient care, including physical exams, medication administration (IV, IM, PO, SQ), constant patient monitoring and hygiene, for all patients admitted by equine emergency care, medicine, surgery and theriogenology and all in-house patients. This technician will directly instruct senior veterinary students and student workers in the technical aspects of patient care. This position will also monitor the welfare of University-owned horses, including those enrolled in research projects. This position will provide assistance to clinicians with procedures and receiving of emergency cases.

This position is Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility is required as schedule may involve working beyond 5:00 p.m., some weekends, and/or holidays.

This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. Employees in this role must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDC guidelines.

Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccination series, periodic titer checks, and any necessary boosters.

Responsibilities
  • Instruction of veterinary students in various aspects of equine patient exam, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, and general horse handling.
  • Assist clinicians, students, and residents with admission, patient restraint, and diagnostic procedures of equine cases admitted to the equine hospital.
  • Provide direct patient care, including, but not limited to physical exams, medication administration, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, obtaining blood, fecal and urine samples, and fluid therapy.
  • Maintain floor stock and biosecurity of the hospital ICU, inpatient and outpatient barns, Isolation, main treatment areas, and procedural areas.
Qualifications

Level I:

  • Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology
  • 5 years of hands-on experience with advanced and specialized tasks as a veterinary technician, showing skill in handling complex procedures and assignments in the field.

Level II:

  • Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology
  • 7 years of hands-on experience with advanced and specialized tasks as a veterinary technician, showing skill in handling complex procedures and assignments in the field.

Level III:

  • Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology
  • 9 years of hands-on experience with advanced and specialized tasks as a veterinary technician, showing skill in handling complex procedures and assignments in the field.

License and Certifications:

Specialty license and Licensed Veterinary Technician with an active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician required upon hire.

OR

Specialist License required and has men all requirements to become a Certified Veterinary Technician in the State of Alabama within 180 days.
