Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to ensure quality care for pets and promote greater efficiency by relieving technicians and veterinarians of technical and administrative work. The Technician Assistant performs a variety of patient- and client-care duties, conducts patient assessments, oversees animals recovering from anesthesia, and performs procedures and treatments.

The Technician Assistant uses sound judgment when making decisions about patient care, responds quickly and calmly to emergencies, and maintains high standards of patient care. This person communicates clearly with veterinarians, other practice personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care they need. Technician Assistants are friendly and flexible, able to multi-task, prioritize, and think creatively. They believe strongly in the quality of care provided and communicate this assurance to clients. The Technician Assistant also maintains hospital cleanliness and may provide training to other team members.

Position reports to the Practice Manager and receives direction from veterinarians. Works alongside Technicians, who determine the scope of support services and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
  • Provides compassionate patient care, keeping patients clean, dry, and comfortable.
  • Alerts veterinarians to changes in patients’ conditions.
  • Recognizes contagious diseases and follows relevant procedures.
  • Provides safe and effective patient restraint.
  • Administers medications.
  • Uses proper safety techniques for radiological procedures.
  • Recovers patients from anesthesia.
  • Assists in surgery and dentistry.
  • Performs emergency care, CPR, and intensive care as needed.
  • Documents treatments and assists with procedures like IV catheterization.
  • Ensures patients leave in better condition, e.g., clean and with IV catheter removed.
  • Maintains knowledge of drugs and calculates dosages.
  • Assists with lab tests and completes medical records accurately.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
  • Cleans and maintains surgical equipment.
  • Keeps hospital clean and stocked.
  • Removes trash, sweeps, mops floors daily.
  • Launders linens.
  • Ensures inventory is stocked appropriately.
Compensation & Benefits

Hourly wages depend on skills, qualifications, experience, and location, with higher wages for CVT/RVT certification. Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of recent veterinary or medical experience.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Compassion and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Work energetic and focused shifts, sometimes exceeding 10 hours.
