Job summary

Vale Park Animal Hospital in Indiana is seeking a veterinary technician to support veterinarians with medical procedures, patient care, and client communication. The position involves assisting in exams, surgeries, anesthesia, and emergencies, with exposure to blood, urine, and other bodily fluids.

Candidates should have at least two years of experience (preferred), CVT or RVT certification, a high-school diploma, and a willingness to work with reptiles or companion mammals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and maintains the exam rooms, treatment, and surgical areas.
  • Performs physical assessments; record observations in the medical record.
  • Restrains pets effectively even when large or difficult.
  • Understands common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and can explain them to clients.
  • Knows how to apply SQ, IM, and IV injections.
  • Handles client's medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when needed.
  • Understands usage, dosage, and common side effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to clients.
  • Assists the veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures, prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
  • Performs emergency procedures; controlling bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
  • Performs laboratory procedures such as skin cytology's, urinalysis, and ensures that tests are recorded in the patient's medical record.
  • Knows common disease states and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or worsen with hospitalized patients.
  • Keeps up with new developments in the field by reading current journals and attending continuing education. Attends off site CE as required to maintain your license.
  • Perform venipuncture using patient's cephalic, saphenous, and jugular veins in a manner that minimizes trauma to patients, injury to veins, and that allows you to obtain a non-hemolyzed blood sample successfully and can place IV catheters and properly care for them, and also understands the use and care of IV pumps.

Job description

The veterinary technicians are the veterinarian's primary medical support in performing medical procedures. They assist the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. Computer and telephone skills are a must, as well as good client communication skills. They must be able to perform moderate physical labor including but not limited to lifting and restraining dogs up to 40 pounds. This position will also expose them to animal bodily fluids including but not limited to blood, urine and feces.

Requirements:
