  • Basic pet restraint/handling skills
  • Customer service/interpersonal skills
  • Basic writing skills

Responsibilities
  • The veterinary assistant position at our clinic is focused on providing support/aid to our registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) and veterinarians. The primary role is to provide animal restraint for our medical staff to safely perform medical procedures as needed.
  • Be ready in the treatment area and be proactive in providing help to the technicians and doctors when a patient enters the treatment area. Patient care comes first; no other duties should take precedence over patient care.
  • Familiarize yourself with the flow of the clinic to better help the medical staff and patients. Many veterinary assistants aspire to become RVTs or veterinarians; we support you in learning and growing professionally.
  • Clock into our payroll platform and be ready to work by your scheduled start time.
  • Walk hospitalized pets, clean kennels/litterboxes, provide fresh food/water as needed.
  • Review the schedule for the day so you are prepared for what needs to be done for each appointment ahead of time.
  • DVM appointments: RVTs will receive each patient for appointments and gather a history. If indicated, the RVT will then bring the patient back to the treatment area and hand the patient off to a vet assistant. The assistant will restrain for an RVT to perform any testing or procedure needed (e.g., heartworm test blood draw, nail trim, ear swab).
  • Vet assistants can expand duties based on experience/training.
  • Surgery cases: RVTs will receive each patient in the morning to check in surgical cases. Once the patient is admitted, the RVT will bring the patient back to the treatment area and hand the patient off to a vet assistant. The assistant will restrain the pet to allow the RVT to place a catheter, draw blood, or perform any other procedure needed to prep the pet for surgery.
  • Technician appointments: An RVT will receive the patient and bring back to the treatment area to hand off to the vet assistant. The assistant will restrain for nail trims, blood draws, medication administration, cold laser therapy, etc., as needed.
  • Make sure exam rooms and the treatment area are stocked and clean throughout the day. Close the exam rooms at the end of the business day.
  • Keep up on laundry, cleaning surgical instruments, wrapping and autoclaving surgical packs (once trained).
  • At the end of the day, help with the closing list.
