Kokomo Animal Hospital offers an externship for third and fourth-year veterinary students, providing hands-on experience in a busy clinic. Externs will engage with a variety of cases, from surgeries to urgent care, while developing clinical and communication skills. Opportunities for a stipend and mentorship make this externship a unique learning experience.
An externship with Kokomo Animal Hospital will be busy and fast-paced. As a walk-in clinic, you will see a broad mix of cases, including but not limited to, surgeries, dentals, urgent/emergent cases, wellness exams, and exotics. We currently have four DVMs, two of whom have been with Kokomo Animal Hospital for over 15 years, and our team enjoys teaching others.
Students will work closely with the supervising DVMs to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Kokomo Animal Hospital are designed for third and fourth-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
