An externship at National Veterinary Associates offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Participants will work alongside experienced veterinarians, developing essential skills in patient care and communication while receiving mentoring during their educational journey.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate at Animal Medical Center of Hattiesburg.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
