An externship at Animal Clinic of La Porte offers veterinary students the chance to gain hands-on clinical experience while working with leading professionals in a supportive setting. Students can enhance their clinical and communication skills, gaining insight into veterinary practices and patient management.
Job Description
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, all share some common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing clinical skills, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externships at Apollo Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
