National Veterinary Associates offers externship opportunities for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. This externship allows students to collaborate with veterinarians, enhancing their clinical and communication skills while actively engaging in the daily operations of veterinary practice.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will collaborate closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. At Sacajawea Veterinary Hospital, externships are designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the stipend program.
