National Veterinary Associates offers an externship at Elmhurst Animal Care Center, providing veterinary students a unique chance to gain clinical experience. Students will receive mentorship from Associate Veterinarians, enhancing their skills in various veterinary practices over a duration of two to eight weeks, with potential stipends available.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a valuable opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration at Elmhurst Animal Care Center typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Housing may be available in some cases.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
