National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers externship opportunities for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience at NVA hospitals. Externs work under supervision to learn day-to-day practice operations and participate in patient care during 2–8 week placements.
Responsibilities include gathering histories, performing exams, assisting surgeries, diagnostic workups, dentistry, and communicating with the medical team and clients.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Eligible veterinary students of all class years are encouraged to participate in NVA externships, which typically range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, observe/assist or perform surgical procedures, and manage patients medically. In addition, externs will practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. A comprehensive benefits program includes medical, dental, vision, a 401k with employer match, and paid time off (including sick time) for all eligible employees. For positions based in Colorado, additional paid sick and safe leave and public health emergency leave are provided in accordance with state law. Compensation and benefits details will be discussed during the interview process.
