Join a leading pet care organization as a veterinary extern! This unique externship opportunity allows veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience, working closely with experienced veterinarians in a supportive environment. Enhance your skills in medical care, diagnostics, and client communication while enjoying the scenic mountains of Virginia.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will develop their communication skills by interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Our hospital is located in the scenic mountains of central Virginia and features a laid-back, family-oriented atmosphere.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the program.
