National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. This opportunity allows students to work closely with veterinarians on various tasks, including patient care, diagnostics, and surgical assistance. Participants will enhance their clinical and communication skills throughout the externship, which typically lasts between two to eight weeks.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, common features include a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
Students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for stipend program details.
