An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a valuable opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its unique features, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Externs will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. This program also emphasizes developing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
Students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For details on stipend amounts and eligibility, please visit our website. The stipend for Care Animal Hospital is $1,000.
