Job summary

Dodgeville Veterinary Services is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians in patient care, laboratory work, and client education. This role requires assisting during exams and surgeries, handling samples, radiographs, and maintaining clean facilities, with a focus on compassionate patient care.

The ideal candidate will have weekend availability, basic math and computer skills, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Weekend work availability as required.
• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to lift patients and equipment up to 25 pounds; assist with heavier lifts.
• Follow OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic math for calculating medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS Office applications.
• Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist outpatient exams by taking histories and weights and providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Clean and restock exam rooms and labs; ensure public areas and equipment are maintained.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in client interactions; show compassion to patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and team members including client discussions and plans.
• Any other duties as assigned.
