Position Purpose

The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to our Vetco Total Care hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant represents the mission and values to all clients. Our Veterinary Assistants set the tone for technical and customer support in the hospital and are responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the practice.

Essential Job Functions

• Greet clients and patients, record vital signs, and document in the electronic medical record.
• Assist veterinarians with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, handle medications, and maintain records.
• Schedule appointments, provide client education, and relay test results.
• Help prepare patients for procedures and assist during anesthesia and recovery.
• Administer in-hospital treatments, keep patients comfortable, and assist with patient care under supervision.
• Assist in training new staff and disseminate knowledge as required.
• Maintain a clean hospital environment.

Other Duties

• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Provide backup support at the front desk and on the phone.

Supervision

Work is performed under the supervision of veterinarians and the Veterinary Technician, with overall direction from the HOM/HLOD.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of veterinary or related animal care experience preferred.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Compassionate, professional, and able to handle stressful situations.
• Proficient with phones and computers.
• A team player willing to learn and adapt.

Work Environment

Primarily in the hospital, involving physical activity like bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Significant client and pet contact.

Compensation
