Position Purpose

The Veterinary Assistant provides excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and exceptional customer service to their owners. They embody our mission and values, setting the tone for technical and customer support, and fostering team cohesion and motivation.

Core Responsibilities

• Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, record vital signs, and document in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Assist veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, handle laboratory samples, dispense medications, and maintain records.
• Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, and update records.
• Prepare patients for procedures, assist with anesthesia, monitor vital signs, and help with recovery.
• Administer in-hospital treatments, keep patients comfortable, and assist with feeding and walking.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as needed.
• Maintain a clean hospital environment.

Additional Duties

• Perform other tasks as assigned.
• Provide backup support at the front desk and on the phone.

Supervision

Work is supervised by veterinarians and veterinary technicians, with overall direction from the HOM/HLOD or shift supervisor.

Qualifications

• At least 1-year experience in veterinary practice or relevant animal care experience.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Compassionate, professional, and able to handle stressful situations.
• Computer and telephone skills.
• Team player willing to learn and adapt.

Work Environment

Primarily in the hospital, involving bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Direct contact with clients and pets is frequent.
