Job summary

Churchville Veterinary Clinic in Harford County, Maryland is seeking a full-time Veterinary Assistant to join our growing practice. The role supports veterinarians and technicians in patient care and clinic operations, focusing on animal handling and daily clinical tasks.

Position Summary

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and technicians in delivering quality patient care and ensures the clinic operates efficiently. This role focuses on animal handling, basic care, and assisting with daily clinical tasks.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The general duties of the Veterinary Assistant include, but are not limited to:

• Provide care for hospitalized patients, including feeding, providing water, exercising and maintaining a clean safe environment
• Safely handle patients for examination, diagnostic testing and various treatments
• Fill, dispense and administer medications accurately and safely under the direction of the treating provider
• Collect lab samples including blood, feces and urine for transport to the lab or in-house diagnostics, and run various in-house tests such as blood work, urinalysis and ear cytologies.
• Perform outpatient services such as nail trims, anal gland expressions and sanitary trims
• Complete medical records, estimates and treatment plans with accuracy and thoroughness
• Prepare exam rooms, treatment areas and surgical suites
• Clean and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment and materials
• Support client interactions, including basic education, reviewing estimates and treatment plans and communicating discharge instructions
• Assist in maintaining adequate stock of necessary inventories and supplies throughout the hospital
• Utilize telephones and electronic medical records systems
• Perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and answering phones as needed

Qualifications

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Strong communication, multitasking and collaboration skillsCompassionate, reliable and detail-oriented
• Veterinary experience is preferred

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift 50 lbs
• Stand, walk, bend and kneel for extended periods of time
• Comfortable working around animals including those that may be stressed or fractious
• Must be able to work in environments with large amounts of noise and strong odors

Compensation

• Hourly rate of $17.00 - $24.00
• Compensation negotiable based on skills and experience.
• Eligible for periodic bonus

Schedule

• Full time: 30-40 hours weekly based on the needs of the hospital between the hours of 7:30 am and 6:30 pm.
• Occasional weekends and holidays as needed.
