Position Purpose

The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant represents our mission and values to all clients. They set the tone for technical and customer support in the hospital and are responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the team.

All hospital staff are responsible for performing duties that:

  • Prioritize the patient’s needs
  • Create an exceptional customer experience
  • Address issues promptly and effectively
  • Promote teamwork and shared goals
Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must be able to perform all duties with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, obtain weights and vital signs, and record in the medical record. Collect patient histories and document visits.
  • Assist veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, process lab samples, handle medications, and maintain medical records.
  • Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
  • Help prepare patients for procedures, assist with anesthesia, monitor vital signs, and help with recovery and discharge.
  • Perform in-hospital treatments, administer medications, and keep patients comfortable and safe.
  • Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as needed.
  • Maintain a clean hospital environment.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
  • Support front desk and phone coverage as needed
Supervision and Planning

Work is supervised by veterinarians and the HOM/HLOD. The role plays a crucial part in ensuring efficient hospital operations and high-quality patient care.

Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of veterinary practice or animal care experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills

  • Team player willing to learn and adapt
Work Environment

Primarily in the hospital, involving physical activity such as bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Frequent contact with clients and pets.
