Summary

The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) and CARE (Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment) are facilities dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.

Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high-quality care for the animals we serve.

Position Overview

The Director of Veterinary Services, ARC will perform all the duties of a licensed veterinarian, including providing compassionate, high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk animals. The Director will provide a management presence on the floor to ensure efficient and effective animal flow. The Director will hold the entire team accountable to act with urgency, providing balanced, high-quality care to the animals, coordinating with departments, and practicing Fear Free values.

This position directly manages 1-2 Licensed Veterinary Technicians.

This role offers a unique opportunity for a veterinarian to drive the care and rehabilitation of animals who are victims of cruelty and neglect. ARC's team works together to recover, enrich, treat, and support a wide range of cases.

Schedule

The schedule for this role is Sunday-Wednesday, 9am-7pm, with flexibility on Sunday (8am-6pm).

Responsibilities
Managing Medical Cases (60%)
  • Ensure high-quality, individualized care considering medical and behavioral needs.
  • Participate in case review panels for treatment and humane euthanasia decisions.
  • Perform humane euthanasia with compassion.
  • Conduct medical intakes for new cases and collaborate with partner hospitals.
  • Provide medical support for large-scale cases.
  • Perform exams, diagnostics, and treatments using Fear Free handling.
  • Develop diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH guidelines.
  • Provide medical care for outpatients and animals in transition.
  • Maintain thorough medical records.
  • Respond to after-hours concerns.
  • Oversee and maintain the ARC animal census.
People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%)
  • Oversee daily medical care and case flow.
  • Lead daily rounds and team meetings.
  • Develop and implement SOPs.
  • Set expectations, provide feedback, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Promote positive management practices and staff development.
  • Address staff concerns and handle employee relations.
  • Support leadership in change management and policy improvements.
Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%)
  • Support partner departments and maintain confidentiality.
  • Attend meetings and represent ARC publicly.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Follow SOPs and assist with projects and data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with integrity and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn and implement new protocols.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours, weekends, and in emergencies.

Additional Information

This is a full-time exempt position based in NYC, requiring flexibility for early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary ranges from $169,500 to $179,500 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. The role includes a signing bonus. For more details, visit the ASPCA Careers website.

Qualifications & Education

Must have a DVM degree and at least 3 years of experience in a relevant setting. Fear Free certification required within 6 months of hire. Shelter experience preferred but not mandatory.
