Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor is accepting applications for the position of Veterinarian. The Maryland Racing Commission veterinarian is responsible for the overseeing the health and well-being of horses participating in races at Maryland racetracks. This position involves conducting pre-race examinations, monitoring horses during race, ensuring compliance with state regulations regarding equine health and medication and other duties as assigned.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Racing Commission veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of horses participating in races at Maryland racetracks. This position involves conducting pre-race examinations, monitoring horses during races, ensuring compliance with state regulations regarding equine health and medication and other duties as assigned.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position may include but not limited to:



Conduct on track inspection of horses prior to, during and after a race to visually appraiser the fitness and soundness of a horse to insure the safety of the animal and the rider
Enter information noted into Equine Injury Database for each horse observed prior to racing, vet scratches and horsed prohibited from participating until further examination. Prepare death reports and maintain records of veterinary treatments.
Inspect horses racing during the day by visually appraising the soundness of a horse to insure the safety of the animal and the rider


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
Experience: 2-3 years of experience in equine veterinary practice, preferably in a racetrack setting
